Each week, you will join 15hrs of General English group classes, 5hrs of private tuition and 5hrs of elective or optional classes.

In your group General English classes, you will be studying alongside students from all over the world and following our coursebook. You will benefit from the communicative methodology used in class and extensive practice enabling you to improve your overall English fast.

For your 5 hours of private tuition, tell us what you need and we will make it happen! Some students ask to use this 1-1 time to focus on their writing skills, others wish to work on their oral presentation skills, and others need English for a specific field, such as biology or aviation! We will discuss your needs and goals with you at the time of enrolment and tailor your one-to-one lessons accordingly.

Finally, depending on your timetable, you will have access to 5hrs per week of elective or optional classes, enabling you to widen your vocabulary range, meet more students, and progress even faster!

Course Customisation

This program is made up of 4 different components which allows ideal personalisation to suit your needs, goals and interests.

Your General English class will be your main class each day, Monday to Thursday. In this class, you will focus on everyday communication and your all-round English level. To help you interact and communicate confidently and accurately, our teachers will give you the language you need as well as feedback to ensure all students will make fast progress.

The right level for you

On your first day at ELC you’ll take a placement test and have a spoken interview so we can place you in the class that’s right for you.

On the first day of your new class and if you change course or level, you will receive a coursebook to keep. Our coursebooks and associated digital resources are based on the latest research into English as it is really used in everyday situations. We think that it is important that classes follow a coursebook to give your program structure and for you to use as a reference in the future.

Every single week, your General English classes will cover a range of language skills and develop your grammar and vocabulary as well as speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The communicative methodology used in classes will enhance your skills acquisition as well as foster your fluency.

Your coursebook will feature a range of subjects and associated vocabulary, including science, history or the environment. This range of current topics will keep your lessons interesting and engaging, with every student weighing in in conversations and putting their developing language skills into practice.

Every Monday you will take a short progress test to revise what you have studied and assess your progress.

Tell us what you need, we will make it happen! 5hrs per week of 1-1 tuition means that you can get all the attention you need to focus on your individual areas of needs or on particular topics.

How this works:

First, we will organise a level assessment as well as a needs analysis. From this, we will get an all-round understanding of your skills, needs, goals and preferred learning style. This will help us prepare your first private lessons.

As time goes by and as you progress towards your goals, your private teacher will liaise with you to adjust your 1-1 program towards any areas of weakness or any further topics of interests.

What can I focus on during my private classes?

The answer is: anything you want! Some students ask to focus on specific skills, such as writing, pronunciation or oral presentation skills. Others choose this program to focus on specific language fields related to their area or studies or work. Others ask for support in preparing for specific English language tests, such as TOEIC, TOEFL or OET. Either way, our team will prepare and research to offer you fully tailored private tuition and get you to the level you need.

Unique to ELC, English Extras are a range of workshops, classes and activities which give students the chance to practise their English skills in a relaxed and stimulating environment while learning new skills and making friends. Every Friday, you can attend 3 classes of your choice.

ELC is Sydney’s only school offering up to 27 hours per week of face to face tuition. Not all students join but if you would like to make fast progress, joining these 2 hours per week of conversation class will help you grow your vocabulary range and your fluency even faster! Topics change every week but include fields like travel, family, science, the environment, sports, etc…

*Note that depending on teacher availability, some of your private lessons may take placein at the same time as these conversation classes.

Your core classes will run Monday to Thursday, with optional classes on Fridays, as well as in the late afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The following schedules show how you can choose to study anywhere from 20 hours to 27 hours each week to best suit your availability and goals.

Our General English courses welcome students of all English abilities, from beginner to proficient. The program is structured around 5 main course levels, as highlighted in the table below, which each take 12 weeks to complete. Inside each of these levels, 3 sub-levels and several classes running concurrently allow for for a more precise placement on first day and ensure students feel their progression to the next stage every 4 weeks.

This also means you will have to speak English all day, every day, which will again fast-track your progress.

As a daytime student, you will enjoy generous break times, which will allow you to meet more students, make more friends and practise your English all day.

In the daytime, you will be able to make the most of all our services and facilities, inlcuding our student services desk, our travel desk, our computer lab, as well as flexible student counselling appointment times.

Studying in the daytime means you can join social activities after class, in the evenings and on weekends. These are a great chance to meet other students, practise your English and explore Sydney. Typical activities include coastal walks, visiting local attractions, pub nights, cultural events and more.

If you are planning to work in an evening job, such as working in a restaurant or in office cleaning, studying in the daytime will be ideal for you.

In the daytime, in addition to your core 20 hours of lessons per week, you have access to up to 7 hours of optional classes each week. This means learning more, imporving faster, as well as meeting more students from other countries!
