ELC is an approved Cambridge Exam Preparation centre: in the daytime you can choose between 2 courses to either prepare for the B2 First or the C1 Advanced exam.

Course Customisation

This program is made up of 4 different components which allows ideal personalisation to suit your needs, goals and interests.

Cambridge is your Major course: you will join the same class every day, Monday to Thursday, for 15 hours per week.

The Cambridge program focuses on making progress in your all-round English ability whilst developing skills and techniques for exam success. ELC’s thoroughly researched syllabus, up to date teaching materials, and excellent teaching methods ensures students will make fast progress in:

  • Examination skills
  • Fluency and pronunciation
  • Grammar and vocabulary
  • Writing skills
  • Listening and reading skills

Customise your General English course to your needs and goals: you can choose from a great range of elective classes to develop your skills in a specific area.

These elective classes run in 4-week blocks and you can either change every 4 weeks, which is great for variety, or continue with the same elective for several months, which will help you greatly if you need to focus on one area more particularly.

Cambridge Testbuster

Learn tips for each paper of your Cambridge exam; complete practice tests and tasks with feedback and target your strengths and weaknesses to excel in your exam.

This is for students who especially need to focus on their writing skills for the FCE, CAE or CPE exams.

This course is for exam students who need to improve their grammar and vocabulary.

This module focusses on the skills needed to do well in the speaking test and listening exam.

Our range of Special Focus Modules changes regularly and more choice will be available once you progress to a different course.

Unique to ELC, English Extras are a range of workshops, classes and activities which give students the chance to practise their English skills in a relaxed and stimulating environment while learning new skills and making friends. Every Friday, you can attend 3 classes of your choice.

Depending on your level, you can choose from English Extras in the following fields:

Communication

Classes offered include conversation, pronunciation, video talks and vocabulary to go.

Join up to 5hrs of classes and workshops focused on vocabulary and communication in a range of Business fields.

Practice for the IELTS exam with expert tips, techniques and feedback.

Visit places of interest in Sydney with other students (additional entry fees might apply).

Dedicated Cambridge Exam practice sessions are also offered at times during your Cambridge Exam Preparation course.

ELC is Sydney’s only school offering up to 27 hours per week of face to face tuition1 Not all students join but if you would like to make fast progress, joining these 2 hours per week of conversation class will help you grow your vocabulary range and your fluency even faster! Topics change every week but include fields like travel, family, science, the environment, sports, etc…

Your class schedule

Your core classes will run Monday to Thursday, with optional classes on Fridays, as well as in the late afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The following schedules show how you can choose to study anywhere from 20 hours to 27 hours each week to best suit your availability and goals.

Our General English courses welcome students of all English abilities, from beginner to proficient. The program is structured around 5 main course levels, as highlighted in the table below, which each take 12 weeks to complete. Inside each of these levels, 3 sub-levels and several classes running concurrently allow for for a more precise placement on first day and ensure students feel their progression to the next stage every 4 weeks.

B2 First is an upper-intermediate level examination. It indicates that your level of English is sufficient for practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs in many industries. You can communicate effectively in most social and travel and some work situations. You can use all basic grammatical structures and some more complex. Your range of vocabulary is sufficient to express yourself clearly.

C1 Advanced is an advanced level examination. It recognises the ability to communicate with confidence in English in most everyday situations, including work and academic contexts. You can communicate fluently in social, travel and work situations. You have good operational command of English, using an extensive range of vocabulary and complex grammatical structures effectively.

C2 Proficiency is the highest-level Cambridge qualification. It recognises the ability to communicate with fluency and sophistication at an exceptional level. You can communicate fluently in social, travel, work and academic contexts. You are a highly competent English speaker, with the potential to work in a very senior professional or academic environment.

In the daytime, you will be able to make the most of all our services and facilities, inlcuding our student services desk, our travel desk, our computer lab, as well as flexible student counselling appointment times.

Studying in the daytime means you can join social activities after class, in the evenings and on weekends. These are a great chance to meet other students, practise your English and explore Sydney. Typical activities include coastal walks, visiting local attractions, pub nights, cultural events and more.

If you are planning to work in an evening job, such as working in a restaurant or in office cleaning, studying in the daytime will be ideal for you.

In the daytime, in addition to your core 20 hours of lessons per week, you have access to up to 7 hours of optional classes each week. This means learning more, imporving faster, as well as meeting more students from other countries!
